Mossel Bay is situated right between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. It is a small harbour town located along the Garden Route in the Western Cape Province. It was here that the Europeans first set foot in South Africa. For sandy beaches, water sports and extreme adventures, Mossel Bay is the your ideal destination.

The name Mossel Bay meaning the Bay of Mussels is somewhere linked with the Duth shipping merchants in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Cornelis de Houtman, an explorer, named the place Mosselbaai when he stopped by there in 1595. There's another account that suggests that Dutch Admiral Paulus van Caerden named when he visited it in 1601.
However, the modern history of Mossel Bay is said to have begun in 1488 when Bartolomeu Dias, the Portuguese explorer came to a place close to the present-day Dias Museum Complex.
The origin of the name Mossel Bay (the Bay of Mussels) has to do with the ascendancy of the Dutch shipping merchants in the late 16th and the early 17th Centuries. In one account, the explorer Cornelis de Houtman named the place Mosselbaai when he stopped there in 1595, whilst in another, the Dutch Admiral Paulus van Caerden named it when he came ashore on 8 July 1601. Whatever the case, though, the mussels and oysters on the shore would have been a welcome addition to the limited diet on which ship’s crews were expected to survive in those days. the Bay had found its place on the maps by the time Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer made it here in 1497. In spite of several visitors from Europe visiting now and then, it was after the Dutch governor Jan de la Fontaine visited Mossel Bay in 1734 that the first permanent European building came up in 1787. From the initial period itself, Mossel Bay served as the port for the Souther Cape region. Later in 1912, the construction of the first breakwater took place.
In the 20th century, fishing and farming remained the main enterprises in the area. After the natural gas fields offshore were discovered 1969, the Bredasdorp Basin, in 1980 and the EM field, in 1983, the Mossgas-to-liquids refinery came up in 1987. It was renamed as the PetroSA refinery in 2002. This led to a sea-change in the development of the port. Property development and residential houses increased following this development. However, the growth of tourism and business has also helped its local economy.
The summer holiday season attracts hordes of tourists to this area. Recently, the Municipality documented that the town caters to around 50000 to 60000 tourists in this period. There is Cape St Blaize Cave that is located right beneath the Cape St. Balize Lighthouse. It is one of the oldest archaeological excavation sites in South Africa. It is managed by Heritage Western Cape as a Provicial Heritage Site.
South African rock art has been preserved in the mountains situated north of Mossel Bay. San people created this art and some of the specimens created by them date back to 27000 years.
The Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex is the biggest museum in the Mossel Bay. It provides insight into the history surround the Mossel Bay in terms of the environment, culture and archaeology.
