Map

Soweto is basically a township of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality situated in Gauteng, South Africa. It's not a name in itself but an abbreviation for South African Townships. Earlier, it was a separate municipality, it is now a part of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.
There are over two million people who reside in Soweto. There are different kinds of residential properties starting from luxurious mansions to temporary shacks.

Soweto came into existence in 1930s with Orlando being the first township. By the time it was 1950s, more black people shifted to Soweto. It developed however in a haphazard manner. Residents of Soweto believe in their urban pride and don't appreciate the country people with their crude manners. However, it continues to evolve in terms of its culture, particularly for its younger population. There's a marked Afro-American influence in the way they conduct themselves. They have their own local language called tsotsitaal which is a combo of many local languages.

Among the tourist attractions, there is Nelson Mandela's house. Mandela stayed here before his imprisonment in 1961. You cannot enter it for security reason but you can glance through from a distance and see the place. Other notable attractions include Archbishop Desdmond Tutu's residence, the Sisulu residence and the Hector Pieterson memorial museum. The museum has undergone a lot of renovation and now carries the accounts of events of 1976 in terms of visual images and eye-witness accounts.

If you are keen on understanding the indigenous medicine traditions of South Africa, you should explore the Credo Mutwa village located in Central Western Jabavu. Mutwa is a healer and sort of fortune teller who claimed to have predicted some of the political events. It is aimed preserving and respecting the traditional medicinal practices and knowledge. Regina Mundi is a local church that came into limelight for being a site of many anti-apartheid organizations. Freedom Square should also interest you where the Freedom Charter was accepted as the main document of the Congress Alliance.

Kwaito and Kasi Rap, the style of hip-hop unique for South Africa is said to have originated in Soweto. This style of music easily blended with other house music, American hip-hop, traditional African music etc and turned out to be a great attraction for black South Africans.

Soweto has two soccer teams that play for the top South African football league: the Kaizer Chiefs and the Moroka Swallows.

In other interesting events, the Soweto Wine Festival was initiated in 2004. It is a three-night festival. It is organized at Soweto Campus of the University of Johannesburg somewhere in the first weekend of September each year. It attracts more than 6000 wine enthusiasts, over 100 of South Africa's wineries. It includes more than 900 fine wines in the festival.

In terms of transportation, there are trains operated by Metrorail between Soweto and central Johannesburg. Train stations in Soweto are Naledi, Merafe, Inhlazane, Ikwezi, Dube, Phefeni, Phomolong, Mzimhlophe, Mlamlankunzi, Orlando, Nancefield, Kliptown, Tshiawelo and Midway. There is a bus rapid transit system called, Rea Vaya, which provides transport for around 16 000 commuters daily.
