As a town, Benoni is a part of Ekurhuleni municipality, Gauteng, South Africa. It is a unique area for its numerous horse stables per square kilometre than anywhere else in Southern hemisphere. However, Benoni has a strange history to come to terms with. It dates back to 1981 when Johan Rissik, the surveyor-general of the Transvaal Republic found it complicated to assign title deeds to all unclaimed state property. Rissik named a piece of land Benoni in tune with the Hebrew name meaning "son of my sorrow" which was given by Rachel to her son after she suffered a difficult process of giving birth. Rissik however named it such because he had trouble establishing exact boundaries of the surrounding and already existing Rietfontein, Modderfontein, Kleinfontein and Brakpan farms and dubbed the process of drawing the line as painful like the birth of Rachel's son.

After gold was discovered in 1887, Benoni sort of developed with Sir George Ferrar, the Chairman of the mining company going for beautification in 1904. With a number of lakes and a string of trees planted around the town, it became a town with scenic beauty. Benoni went on to claim municipality status in 1907.
At present, Benoni is a hub of diversity with people of different languages and beliefs living in the area. With the passage of time, the importance of gold has declined and Benoni shifted its focus on the services and industry. Benoni has emerged as the centre of services for other East Rand towns such as Brakpan, Nigel and Springs. Benoni is also the place where Benoni Heliport is located.
You can visit the local museum to understand the historical significance better. While you can enjoy picnics near the lakes, you can also shop till you drop at the Lakeside Shopping Mall or Northmead Square. It was constructed in the image of a Mississippi Steamboat on one of the lakes. It was in the Northmead Square wherein the cinemas returned to Benoni.

Willowmoore Park is a One Day International Cricket Venue. Charlize Theron, the Oscar winning actress, was born in Benoni. Benoni has many suburbs and retains the suburban feel.
