Sandton is the most vital hub of business and financial activities in South Africa and is famously known for being the richest square mile in Africa. It's situated within the Johannesburg municipality, Gauteng, South Africa.

The name might come across as unusual but it is basically a combination of two suburbs namely Sandown and Bryanston. It was a municipality in 1969 but when South African regions were reorganized, it lost its status as one.
Archaeological studies reveal that the area known as Sandton today was occupied by different indigenous groups such as Tswana and Sotho people. Lone Hill, a suburb in Northen Sandton, shot into limelight because the remains of Iron Age smelter were recovered from there. It's also significant as an area because Esterhysysen was among the one of the Voortrekker parties to settle on a farm Zandfontein. Therefore, one comes across a monument just close to Adrienne Street in Sandown because this is where the family cemetery is situated.
Eventually Zandfontein, Driefontein and Rietfontein went on to make Sandton.
It's astonishing that it has transformed from its primitive roots and how it has amazingly grown into a centre of financial and business activities in the last 50 years. The farms and laid back life are history now and it has been all replaced by fast-paced business frenzy. It is dotted by skyscrapers all along to signify the business growth.
It came into focus in 1990s when many corporate offices from Johannesburg shifted to Sandton due to urban decay. Since then it went on to assume the position of a crucial financial district. It gradually emerged as the pivotal business centre in South Africa. It is home to Sandton Convention Centre, one of the largest convention centres in the continent.
Sandton City is one of the biggest shopping centres in Africa and hence attracts many tourists. A significant part of Johannesburg's business tourism is now focused on Sandton. It has a chain of 5-star hotels too. Sandton is often touted as the materialistic hub and the centre for white flight from Johannesburg.
Lycee Jules Verne, a French International School has its main campus in Sandton. It used to house the forrmer Bond University South Africa, Bond South Africa. It has also got a number of primary and high schools. Crawford College is a leading private school in this area.
If you are tourist, you can visit take tour of Nelson Mandela Square, art galleries and a number of restaurants to get a feel of the Sandton experience.
