The original farm, Oranje Zigt, which was founded in 1709 and grew to be the greatest farm in the Upper Table Valley in the 19th century, is where the Oranjezicht City Farm is situated. This farm grew vegetables and fruit that fed the expanding settlement and colony and supplied passing ships with essential produce until the turn of the 20th century. It was fed by a cluster of springs that began to supply perennial fresh water to Khoekhoen pastoralists as well as sailors and the Company's Gardens in the 17th century. Sucked up by urban growth, the productive farmlands were transformed into a housing syndicate in 1901, and the original homestead that stood on the spot was destroyed in 1957 to make room for a bowling green that, in more recent years, has fallen into disrepair and neglect. Through design, gardening work, and outreach, OZCF aims to re-connect the Oranjezicht neighbourhood and the rest of Cape Town to this underutilised piece of heritage. It also hopes to use it as a catalyst for fostering community cohesion, empowering jobless individuals, educating locals and others about food, environmental, and related issues, beautifying public spaces, and advocating for underutilised or underused green spaces in the City Bowl. Every Saturday (08:15 to 2pm), Sunday (9am to 2pm), and Wednesday (5pm to 9pm) at Granger Bay, V&A Waterfront, the OZCF Market is hosted. Read More

In the South Peninsula of Cape Town, Neighbourhood Farm has installed market gardens, neighbourhood markets, and outdoor classrooms at schools and the False Bay Hospital with funding from the Western Cape Premiers office and the Department of Agriculture as part of a larger vision to create a wellbeing economy. These initiatives include regenerative, biologically diverse environments.
After realising the need for a different inclusive model for poorer communities that will train 10 community members a year to become market gardeners but will also guarantee that the poorest of the poor are included, we are currently finishing the installation of outdoor classrooms at another two schools and installing a Phase Two, 6500m2 training market garden in Ocean View. This garden will include animal husbandry (egg layers), allotments, and an agricultural-processing and training facility.
Together, this enables us to teach children and community members in urban settings where their food actually comes from, how to grow their own food and start food-related businesses, provide a platform for educators to integrate education into the outdoors, offer community members nutrient-dense organic produce at reasonable prices, and provide a roadmap for other communities to replicate our success and build their own wellbeing economies.
