Map

Kimberly is the capital city in the Northern Cape Province in South Africa. It is also the largest city in the province. It is situated around 110 km east of where the Vall and Orange Rivers meet. It has a history that involves mining and the Second Boer War.

In the region, Kimberley was the first city to use electric street lights into its infrastructure way back in 1882. In 1866, Kimberly found its fame when diamonds were discovered here.

Kimberley was the first city in the Southern Hemisphere and the second in the world after Philadelphia to integrate electric street lights into its infrastructure on September 2, 1882. The first Stock Exchange in Africa was also built in Kimberley, as early as 1881. The first stock exchange in the country came up here in 1881. Some of the first few International Exhibitions were held in Kimberly in 1892. The first school of mines was started in 1896 at this place.

With its background in diamond related history, it projects itself as the "City that Sparkles" to attract tourists. There are a number of parks, nature reserves and game farms which draw the tourists to this place. Some of the important landmarks include
