Plettenberg Bay, which is also nicknamed as Plet or Plett, is a town of the Bitou Local Municipality in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Originally, it was named Bahia Formosa which means beautiful bay. Early Portuguese explorers named it as such. It lies on South Africa's Garden Route 210 km from Port Elizabeth and about 600 km from Cape Town.

Plettenberg Bay is situated in an interesting way between the Western and Eastern Cape. Since the town is located on the hillside, you would it entirely on a slope going down to the sea. Historically relevant and active since 15th and 16th century, Plettenberg Bay carries signs of its history all around. From the times of Portuguese explorers used to visit it till date, there are places and artifacts that tell the tale. The remains of the Gonzales Wreck is situated in the town and are history enthusiasts' delight. The old Rectory that was built by the Dutch East India Trading Company in 1776 and Forest Hall, a privately owned stately home that was built in 1864 by William Henry Newdgate take us back to the days when early European settlers had come to this area in 1700s.
At present, Plettenberg Bay is better known for being a hotspot for tourists. It offers several leisure activities. Since you are exploring places to have fun, you may want to indulge yourself in terms of taste too. There are a variety of restaurants, cafes and places to eat that you can choose from depending on the type of food you like. The restaurant at the Beacon Isle Hotel is however a recommendation for all. Since it is built on a small patch of land right between a lagoon and the sea, you might feel when you are seated there that you are freely wafting on the water.
A trip to the N2 toward Port Elizabeth across the Eastern Cape will take you to the Bloukrans Bridge. It is an engineering marvel in itself. You can remember this place as the world's highest commercial bungee jump. It is surely not for the faint hearted.
