About City
Westville is an area situated in the west of Durban. Earlier, it was an independent town in the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. It is 10 km away from the Central Business District of Durban. The best thing about Westville is that it is located quite closer to Durban and yet retains its beautiful ambiance of countryside. Westville is merely 15 minutes’ ride from the city centre.
A number of main townships such as Cato Mano, Claremont and Chesterville are happen to be located in such a way that Westville is central to them. It is a fairly rich area with affluent population.
It developed on the farm called Westville. The farm Westville was named after Martin West, the first British lieutenant-governor of Natal. Its beginnings go back to 1847. It had witnessed a settlement of German immigrants who came there in 1848. It evolved as a town but it got merged into eThekwini later.
There is Palmiet Nature Reserve situated in this area. It consists of 15 km of guided and self-guided trails. Tourists flock here quite often. Tourists explore the Western Inland Route, KwaZulu's local attractions such as The Drakensbeg Battlefield Tours, Game Reserves and Zululand. Dotted by salient churches, museums and grave sites that capture the settlement struggles of the colonial period, there is a long Anglo-German Historical Route that tourists can explore.
For a small area, Westville contains several religious structures. The Westville Catholic Church, Our Lady of Lourdes, the Methodist Church, the Westville Baptist Church, St Elizabethan's Angican Church, One City Church. Habibia Soffie Masjid is a major mosque located in Westville.
Westville has also developed business-wise. There are office parks with offices of a few major companies and firms. It is a more pleasant weather than Durban but closer to Durban nonetheless. N3 and M19 make their offices still accessible. In spite of the development and rapid real estate growth elsewhere, Westville still comes across as a laid-back place moving at its own pace.
