Durban North and Mt Edgecombe are located on the borders.The Gateway Theatre of Shopping is situated in Umhlanga. It is the biggest shopping mall in the southern hemisphere. Uhmlanga is also known for Peark Sky, the second tallest skyscraper in South Africa. it will stand 183 meters after its completion in 2018. There are two beaches - Bronze Beach and Main Beach. There are life guards that patrol it throughout the day. With many rapid developments, Umhlanga is the one of the fastest growing cities in South Africa. It can be discerned from the fact that the population increased from 57.5% in a very short span of time.
Much the same way that Sandton, Gauteng is emerging as the centre of financial activities, Umhlanga is turning out to be the main centre of economic enterprises in Durban. There's a luxury hotel called The Oyster Box that came into being in 1930s. It was originally built as a beach cottage in 1869 well before the town had even been established. It was only later in 1895 that Sir Marshall Campbell who went on to establish Umhlanga. Its first hotel came up in 1920. Later, the town saw the setting up of a shop, a lighthouse, the Natal Anti Shark Measures Board, currently known as the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board and other hotel properties.
In 1972, the Borough of Umhlanga came up through a merger of Umhlanga Rocks, a seaside resort town and the suburb of La Lucia. The first Mayor to get elected was Mr. Rodney Rindel.
The Pearl Sky project is an ambitious enterprise and can transform the area. The Oceans Umhlanga development is also there that will include 3 big buildings. Two of these buildings will include 28 story apartment complexes and the third one will include a 5 star Radisson Blu hotel. There will be 100 shops on the lower floors. Costing R3.1 billion, this is the biggest private sector investment in South African history.
There are many luxury hotels an apartments situated on the beach in the area called Umhlanga Rocks. The Cabana Beach Hotel, the Beverly Hills Hotel, the Oyster Box Hotel, the Umhlanga Sands Hotel and Pearls Umhlanga apartments adorn this area. Many of these places also provide a view of the lighthouse which is a great landmark too. Located on the hill looking upon the Indian Ocean, Umhlanga Ridge is a node that houses retail, office and residential properties. There are roads, parks and public space that dot the Umhlanga Ridge Town Centre
