About City
Hillcrest is a suburb in Durban, South Africa. It is a part of the suburbs on the outer west side of Durban.
Earlier, it was a simple village that was situated on the outskirts of Durban that was governed by its own Town Board. Now it has rapidly developed as a suburb and become a part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. Up until 1969, it was spelt as "Hill Crest". On the r
Earlier, it was a simple village that was situated on the outskirts of Durban that was governed by its own Town Board. Now it has rapidly developed as a suburb and become a part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. Up until 1969, it was spelt as "Hill Crest". On the rise of the main road from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, it was founded in 1895. In early days, it enjoyed its existence as a farming or "weekend" village. At that time, it was way away from Port Natal which was still coming up.
William Gillitt was one of the founding families in this area and after which the suburb of Gillitts is named. Early on, the village was spread out as leasehold sites on the farm that was owned by the Gillitt. The farm was called Albinia. Later, the Acutts established themselves in the area. In 1903, Horace Acutt set up the first school in the village in Hospital Road. It was only later in 1990s that the Hillcrest Waste Water Treatment Plant was finally established. It completed 100 years of its existence in 1995. Since then it has rapidly developed.
Hillcrest has to let go its own Town Board status in 1996. It became a part of the Outer West Local Council which is nothing but a substructure council of the then Durban Unicity. In 2000, the Outer West Local Council and other councils ceased to exist and a single body called eThekwini Municipality came to replace them.
The 1990s and 2000s witnessed quick growth of real estate and businesses in Hillcrest. A number of residential properties and shoping centres came up since then. Hillcrest's Main Road, which was a comfortable residential area at one point in time, is now transformed for office and commercial use.
Hillcrest is located in the Valley of a 1000 Hills which is located 37km inland from Durban and approximately 60km from the new King Shaka International Airport. Tourists who visit Hillcrest make it a point to explore the significant landmarks like Springside Nature Reserve, Iphithi Nature Reserve, Samana Healing Sanctuary (Pty) Ltd etc. Springside Nature Reserve, Mazarat Mountain Bike Park (MTB Park), Alverstone Wildlife Park, Leafs Landscaping are places that tourists try out when they visit Hillcrest.
There is not much of heavy industry in Hillcrest in spite of a lot of development so if you visit Hillcrest, you can still see how it has retained its country feel. Botha's Hill Market is artisanal craft market and food market for visitors of all kinds. If you want to shop for things you need, you can explore Hillcrest Corner, Build It Oxford Village, Link Hills shopping centre, The Colony etc. Gong Lok Chinese Restaurant and Takeaway, Oscars Cafe Hillcrest, Eldorado Spur Steak Ranch are popular restaurants to satisfy your cravings for delicacies.
