Kathu is a town located Northern Cape province. The name of the town means "town under the trees". It is regarded the iron ore capital in the province. It is situated in the Camel Throrn Forest and named after it. An engineer who was working in the town in the early 1990s is credit with coining the phrase "town under the trees". It is situated in the Camel Throrn Forest and named after it. An engineer who was working in the town in the early 1990s is credit with coining the phrase "town under the trees". The engineer was working on something which was a part of the tourist marketing campaign and this must have come up as a marketing slogan.The town came up in the late 1960s or early 1970s. It is located right in the middle of Upington and Vryburg. Both are 2 hour drive each. Kimberley takes 3 hours from Kathu.
The Camel Thorn Tree Acacia Erioloba Forest is one of the only two in the world. The one one is located somewhere between Mariental and Rehoboth in Namibia. Right in the early 1920s, the unique nature of this place was brought to light when it was termed as a State Forest. In 1995, it got registered as a Natural Heritage Site. The Kathu forest is spread across 4000 hectares. These Camel Thorns trees lend support for large Sociable Weaver's nests. Other birds and species also use the same trees. Endemic and protected species have been found in an around the forest. There are trees in the forest that could be older than 300 years old.
The town and the area around it called Sishen got established because of iron mining that started in the Kalahari. It contains of the five largest open-cast iron iron mining operations in the world. Kumba Iron Ore is the major mine operator in Kathu.
Kathu has a golf course and a small game reserve as well. There is a sporting complex that includes tennis courts and swimming pools. One of the tennis courts is named after the legendary tennis player Herta Hegewisch.
There are some important archeological sites in and around Kathu. There are sites which go back to the Stone Age. In 2012, the Kathu Pan site got into limelight when Jayne Wilkins and others revealed evidence of 500,000 year-old stone points. Kathu Townlands is one of the earliest and richest prehistoric archeological sites at Kathu. It has revealed thousands of early Stone Age artifacts such as hand axes and other tools. It is located Kuruman Hills to the east and Langberge mountains to the west.
