Springs is a town situated in the east of Ekurhuleni in the Gauteng province of South Africa. It's merely 50 km away from Johannesburg and 72 km from Pretoria. As the name suggests, it is derived from the fact that there are a number of springs in this area.

Springs has its fascinating narrative of history. It was established as a coal and gold mining town in 1904. However, it has its history that dates back to the middle of the 19th century. Right from 1840, farmers began to shift to this area and took possession of farms.

The city of Springs, east of Johannesburg, is on the East Rand, or what is now known as the Metropolitan area of Ekurhuleni, in the Gauteng Province. It was founded as a coal and gold mining town in 1904, but its history can be traced back to the second half of the 19th century. Way later in 1884, the official map of Springs was registered in Pretoria. To start with, the land's value was a meagre R200 but it shot up later with the discovery of coal and gold.
With the establishment of mines like Great Eastern Mine, the mining activities grew manifold. There were a few iron houses, hotels etc but it was not a town yet. In April 1904, the Springs was declared to be a town. It was given municipal status later in 1912. At one point in time in 1930s, there were 8 gold mines near Springs which made it the largest gold-producing area in the world.

At present, mining does not have the same central significance that it used to have. Manufacturing and engineering industries have taken its place. Processed metals, chemicals, paper and foodstuffs are the chief products of the area. Hospitality, commerce and services are also important economic activities in Springs.

Springs has its adequately developed CBD. There are high rise buildings such as 18-story Checktown building. Checktown building has offices of Telkom for Gauteng. There are other such multi-story buildings like Standard Bank, Nongai building etc in Springs which are either in use, under restoration or renovation.

Springs is home to a few shopping malls called The Avenues and Palm springs and Veranda Shopping Centre, Third Street Arcade, Seedfam Tower Arcade, Standard Band Arcade etc. Selcourt Shopping Centre, Strubenvale Shopping Centre, New State Era Shopping Centre, Bakerton Square etc. are some of the shopping centres located in the suburbs of Springs. Hospitality has fairly developed in Springs. There are a number of restaurants and catering services. The Stable Inn is regarded the best in Springs.
In terms of educational facilities, Springs has a large number of educational institutions. Bakerton Primary School, Creative Education Centre (Nursery and Primary School), and Job Maseko Primary School etc are well known primary schools. Eureka High School, Hoërskool Dr Johan Jurgens High School,
Hoer Tegniese Skool Springs etc. are reputed secondary schools. Ekurhuleni East College, Springs Campus is also located in Springs. For medical care, there are government and private hospitals in Springs.

For tourists, Springs has a lot of places to visit. There are around 120 parks. Presidents Park, Murray Park, Alexander Dam, Frikkie Deysel Park, Butler park, George Sutter Park are among the better known parks.

Springs is also prominent and renowned for its architecture. It is home to second largest collection of small scale Art Deco buildings. There is a miniature of the Voortrekker Monument in Springs CBD near the library.
