However, don't be mistaken by its historic monuments and natural beauty, Pretoria has also earned the reputation for its universities and other academic institutions. Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute, an institute of repute, lies at the outskirts whereas the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research stands out for being the country's largest research organization.
It is also renowned for being a rail and industrial centre. It constantly hums activities related to engineering, food processing and diamond mining.
There are many places to see and outdoor activities are also plenty. Transvaal Museum is quite interesting for its natural history displays. Visitors can get to see Mrs. Ples, the australopithecine fossil found at Sterkfontein.
If you are keen on outdoor excursions, you can visit Wonderboomm and Groenkloof Nature Reserves, the Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary. Also the train ride around Pretoria can be fun.
There are short horse trails that you can get at Voortrekker Monument. You can get the same in the Premier Reserve where you can also get to see Rhino and Eland.
For the extreme outdoors activity, you can try out a skydive or even a first jump at the Pretoria Skydiving Club, which is the largest in the country.
It also houses plenty of shopping centres and restaurants.
