Petrus Johannes Marais was a farmer, shopkeeper and prospector. He happened to read Sir Walter Scott's The Fortunes of Nigel at the time. Having read the book, he founded the Nigel Gold Mining Company following the discovery of gold on the farm of Varkensfontein in 1886. Nigel, the town that developed around the mine continues to carry the stamp of Walter Scott's writing. There are names, characters and places around the town which are from Scott's book. In 2000, Nigel became a part of the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.Gold mines are no longer operational but the town continues to provide bread and butter to its people with its industrial activities. It is notable that Gautrain rail cars were dispatched from here. Hardware and towers related to electricity are manufactured here. Well it's not necessarily industrial and there's smoke all around. If you walk into the suburbs, you will find the natural and pleasant feel of Nigel again.
If you wish to roam around, you can explore Marievale Bird Sanctuary. It is a great place to visit with more than 65 bird species housed here. There are 3500 types of birds. Bird enthusiasts can spot the goliath, black squacco and purple heron here. During winter, if you get lucky, you can also get to see marsh owls.
There is Diepkloof Farm Museum situated towards the Nigel road on the way to Suikerbosrand. It's farmhouse which has been restored. Suikerbosrand itself is a treat if you like hiking. Read More
