About City
Midrand is located in central Gauteng province in South Africa. Situated between Pretoria and Kyalami , Midrand is a part of the City of Johannesburg Municipality.
Established in an area called Halfway House due to its position between Pretoria and Johannesburg, it was initially as a municipality in 1981. But as the restructuring of the local government that saw the end of apartheid

But as the restructuring of the local government that saw the end of apartheid in 1994, it was no longer an independent town. In 2000, it was included in the City of Johannesburg Municipality. It became a part of the Region 2.
Although it is not an independent town, Midrand still stands for the suburbs around the N1 highway north of the Jukskei River up to the border with the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality. Country View, Carlswald, Crowthorne, Glen Austin, Halfway House, Halfway Gardens, Vorna Valley, Noordwyk and Randjesfontein form the part of Midrad.
Midrand is comparatively progressive and has seen a lot of development in a decade or so. Businesses seem to like Midrand for its proximity to its links to major highways and the way it is located in the Gauteng Province which is the economic hub. Thanks to its development, the distance between the outskirts of Johannesburg and Pretoria has nearly vanished. If the trend continues, the Gautent Provincial Government believes that the area will emerge as a city soon.
Midrand is a key business location and hence you would find offices of major mutinationals such as Vodacom, Microsoft, Neotel and Altech Autopage in the area. It was Atterbury Properties which went on to set up the Mall of Africa. The N1 Business Park and International Business Gateway are a few of the eye-catching commercial developments in Midrand.
In terms of landmarks, Midrand is home to the largest conference centre called Gallagher Estate in South Africa. It was constructed on the site of Laerskool/Primary School Halfway House which later shifted near Fire Station. Midrand also has the Nizamiye Mosque, the largest in South Africa. Turkish-born construction tycoon Ali Katircioglu provided the funds for the mosque. The Mall of Africa is situated in the Waterfall City precinct of the town.
Midrad also houses important educational institutions such as The Midrand Graduate Institute, Varsity College's new campus and UNISA's Graduate School of Business Leadership. There are a number of schools in and around this area.
As far as sports is concerned, Kyalami which is an international racetrack is located in Midrand. It is the place where South Africa's most happening racing events take place. The South African Lipizzaners riding academy is also located in the smallholdings of Kyalami.
Grand Central Airport is located at Midrand. One of the stations in the Gautrain rapid rail system is also situated at Midrand.
