I was raised in Worcester after being born in Hermanus on March 3rd. At the University of Stellenbosch, I finished my medical studies, and the Tygerberg Hospital served as my internship site. My husband and I worked in Emmaus, a small hospital located about 20 kilometres west of Winterton on the way to Cathedrals Peak Hotel, from 1985 until 1992. Adventures included hiking in the Drakenberg, performing countless Caesarean sections, orthopaedic surgery, general surgery, and eye operations during these years. In those days, the procedure for a cataract operation involved making a large corneal incision, freezing the lens, and removing it. Since intra-ocular lenses weren't readily available at the time, patients had to wear heavy, +10.00 glasses after the procedure. I served as the district surgeon for the Escourt magistrate and a general practitioner in the town of Winterton from 1990 to 1995. I was absent when we were able to perform the thrilling surgery at Emmaus Hospital. Then, my husband and I completed a three-year MFAM MED programme at the University of Orange Free State to become more qualified general practitioners. I was hired in 1996 to work at Bloemfontein Hospital as a medical officer in ophthalmology. In 2000, I became certified as an ophthalmologist. Since moving to Potchefstroom in December 2000 with my husband, we have continued to operate our private practices. Ophthalmology would be my second choice if I had the chance. The most attractive feature of the human body is unquestionably the eye. Read More
