The Gallery of the University of Stellenbosch (GUS) is an off-campus extension of the Visual Arts Department. Gus-gallery.co.za acts as a central online location for archiving and promoting GUS gallery exhibitions and events. Our goal is to act as a multidisciplinary community centre open to the public, providing a forum for the exchange of information and creative inspiration. Along with exhibitions, GUS also holds live music performances, poetry readings, public workshops, lectures, and panel discussions. A space that supports academic teaching and learning for our students as well as the research and public engagement of our academic programme more broadly, GUS is an extension of Stellenbosch University's Visual Arts Department. Additionally, it provides students with a setting where they can learn and put their new professional skills into practise in a safe and encouraging setting. A crucial component of it is interacting with and helping curators and artists realise their exhibitions. Our postgraduate seminar and examination schedule, research/fundraising collaborations, and a few opportunities for external exhibitions largely determine our exhibition program. The GUS gallery committee, which represents all teaching programmes and student interests, negotiates the annual programme. As a result, we regrettably have very little room for accepting proposals from outside sources. Nevertheless, the committee is open to receiving proposals, especially if they can meaningfully complement our academic program. Last but not least, and perhaps most significantly, GUS does not prioritise sales; we are not a commercial gallery. Our agenda is centred on promoting art as a research methodology, social/cultural connector, and knowledge system. On the other hand, if it's appropriate for the artist or exhibition in question, and this is discussed on a case-by-case basis, we might facilitate sales. Read More
