Plumstead is located just south of Wynberg. The M3, M5, and False Bays beaches are all conveniently close to Plumstead. Also nearby are Constantia, Kirstenbosch, and Wynberg. Plumstead was first mentioned when, in 1762, a large portion of the land beyond Wynberg and the Constantia Valley was granted to the free burghers Hendrick Jergens and Johan Barrens, who were Dutch settlers. The area was referred to as Werk and Rust (Rest). Hendrick Bouman Brigeraad received the land 20 years later. The British took over the Cape after the Dutch East India Company's demise. Henry Batt, an Englishman, arrived in 1807 and purchased Rust and Werk, renaming it Plumstead after a neighbourhood in London. After working the land for 26 years, he passed away in 1833. Messrs. Higgs, Loubscher, and Southey divided and bought the farm Plumstead. The majority of the homes in Plumstead today are a mix of older homes from the 1940s and 1950s with newer homes and apartment buildings. Pick n Pay Centre, Gabriel Place, The Village Square, Checkers Centre, Richmond Centre, and Prospur Centre are just a few of the many small shopping centres that are located in Plumstead. Both the Plumstead Tennis Club and the Cape Town Cricket Club are located in the Plumstead neighbourhood on Victoria Road. Read More
