Map View

Located in Kwa-Zulu-Natal province of South Africa, Durban is the largest city in the region. It is the third most densely populated city in South Africa after Johannesburg and Cape Town. It is also the second most significant centre for manufacturing in South Africa. Durban is also the most buzzing port in the country. It forms the part of eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. Since it has the wonderfully warm subtropical climate and beaches, it is also a major tourist destination.

Going back in history, the research indicates that Durban area was inhabited by communities of hunter-gatherers since 100,000 BC. They lived in this area up until the Bantu farmers and pastoralists from the north witnessed the gradual displacement, incorporation or extermination. As there is no written or well documented history of the earliest of residents, little is known about it. It was Vasco da Gama who traveled along the KwaZulu-Natal coast at Christmastide in 1497 on his way to exploring the route from Europe to India. He named the area "Natal" or Christmas in Portuguese.

Culturally, Durban is pleasantly diverse. There are indigenous South African traditions that mingle with the Indian culture. Hence, people love living in this area. People feast on the bunny chow among the other dishes of Indian food. Durban is not just aware but proud of its cultural heritage and diversity. On the roadside, you would find vendors selling traditional beads and attire that celebrate the Durban culture.

There are a lot of street vendors in Durban. The Warwick Junction Precinct is famous for its street markets teeming with vendors selling goods of different kinds. You can find all kinds of things starting from traditional medicine and clothing to spices.

In terms of important landmarks, you can explore Burman Bush, The Durban Botanic Gardens offer great scenery and occasional musical events near the lake, Hawaan Forest, New Germany Nature Reserve, Pigeon Valley Nature reserve, Umgeni River Bird Park, Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve. Burman Bush is a nature reserve in Morningside. It is located merely 8 km from the CBD. Spread across 50 hectares, it is a small coastal forest. The Durban Botanic Gardens is the oldest public institution as well as the oldest surviving botanical garden in South Africa. In a subtropical climate, it is an amazing stretch of 15 hectares.

The Hawaan Forest carries the legacy of the dry coastal dune forest. It is the last of its kind that remains. It grows dune that goes back 18000 years. New Germany Nature Reserve is a nature park that has a walk-through aviary, snake display and grassland. You can explore it all on foot. There are a lot of bird species like Natal Robin and the purple-crested Turaco.

If you want to go on a shopping spree, you can explore Pavilion Shopping Centre, Musgrave Centre, China Mall etc. To cater to your cravings for delicacies, you can check out The Little India Restaurant, Butcher Boys Morningside, Cafe 1999 etc.

Clifton School, Durban High School, Glenwood High School etc are the leading educational institutions in this area.
