Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa. It is large enough to be find its place in top 50 urban areas in the world. It's the provincial capital as well and the largest city in Gauteng which happens to be the richest province in South Africa. Although it is not one of the three capital cities, it still carries enormous weight. It houses constitutional court. It is situated in the range of hills which is mineral-rich giving it an edge. It is also the hub of gold and diamond trade. With a population of 4,443,827, it is the most populous city of South Africa.

The city dates back to 1886 when it was established after the discovery of gold on a farm. At present, it is equated with Al Dorado for the vast deposits of gold found along the lines of Witwatersrand. The city is named after one of three figures who contributed to its establishment. Soweto which was an independent city from 1970 to 1994 is now a part of Johannesburg. Soweto stands fro South Western Townships. Modern day Johannesburg is touted as the economic powerhouse. It has more than one central business districts (CBD). It is easily the forefront of South Africa's commercial, financial, industrial and mining enterprises. The Central Business District is spread over 6 kilometers. It is peppered with skyscrapers like the Carlton Centre, Marble Towers, Trust bank Building, Ponte City Apartments, Southern Life Centre and 11 Diagonal Street.

There are a number of places to visit depending on one's interest. There are quite a few parks and gardens can be a tourist's delight. With around six million trees, Johannesburg is among the greenest cities in the world. The Johannesburg Zoo is known for being one of the largest zoos in South Africa. The Lion Park housing more than 80 lions is closeby. The Krugersdorp Nature Reserve is only a forty-minute drive from the city centre. The Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve located in the Cradle of Humankind is renowned for its breeding program for endangered species including Bengal tigers, Siberian tigers and the rare species of while lion.

There are a host of museums dwelling upon subjects ranging from Africana, fossils, military history, costume etc. Johannesburg Art Gallery which displays South African and European Landscape and figurative paintings can be a great destination if you are interested in art.
The Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is merely 25 km away.
Johannesburg has a subtropical climate and enjoys a fairly sunny weather. Afternoon thundershowers and cool evenings define the summer and winters contain dry and sunny days followed by chilly nights.
