Map

Located on the southern side of the East Rand of Gautent Province in South Africa, Alberton is a beautiful city that completed 100 years of its existence in 2005.

The city stands out for its residential character with people more inclined towards living in the area although they may commute to nearby suburbs or cities. With a number of access roads to the leading roads in Gauteng, Alberton is situated in a great position. It is located on the shores of the Natal Spruit. It is situated in such a way that it has the major urban centres of Johannesburg on the northwest and Pretoria is 76 km on the north.

There's an interesting narrative around the establishment of Alberton. A little boy of 13 namely Johannes Petrus Meyer purchased 11 hectares of his father's Elandsfontein farm. He went on to construct a house near the Alberton river or Natalspruit. This is the same place where the civic centre is in existence today. Post the sad demise of his wife in 1870, he started a kind of general store and constructed his farmhouse in 1890. Johan Georg (Org) Meyer, Jan's brother, takes charge of the farm after his brother's death. General Hendrik Abraham Alberts, an old war hero, bought a section of Elandsfontein in 1904 from Org. It was General who went on to name it as Alberton. It obtained municipality status years later in 1939.

However, the memory of the original owner of the farm has been retained in some way. The Afrikaans medium primary school Jan Meyer was a way of paying tribute to him. Meyersdal, the rich suburb, is a way to remember the Meyer family. The primary school Generaal Alberts and Alberts Avenue are named after the founder of the town.

Today, Alberton is a strategically important location. Hence, it has vast industrial areas, numerous shopping centres, libraries, clinics, hospitals and entertainment facilities. Along with Germiston, Bedfordview and Edenvale, Alberton has gone on to become a part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

The only reason for Alberton's location is its proximity to the major population centre. It has large industrial areas, and has become a part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, together with other towns such as Germiston, Bedfordview and Edenvale. There are several shopping centres, libraries, clinics, hospitals and entertainment facilities. Alberton Boulevard that began in the late 1980s was a true shift for Alberton.

The development of Alberton has only grown with time as it is now a congregation of 19 suburbs such as Aarton, Alberante, Albertsdal, Brackenhurst, Eden Park, General Alberts Park etc. to name a few. Alberton's current industrial suburb called Alrode was established in 1943.

There are several healthcare facilities in the form of government clinics as well the privately owned Union Hospital and Clinton Clinic. There are sports facilities and clubs for tennis, rugby, boxing, wrestling, cricket, jukskei, netball, hockey, soccer, bowls, korfball and ring tennis in Alberton. Alberton also has the Reading Country Club and Golf Course. Mall at Newmarket is strategically situated at the Newmarket Park, a 77.3 hectares (191 acres) south east of Alberton's CBD.
Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve is Alberton's very own nature reserve. As a home to many wild species such as zebra, red hartebeest, porcupines, black wildebeest, otters, blesbok and 170 bird species.
